It's Oonapalooza!!
Here I go skimming the deadlines again lol
Once I saw that #sewcialists were dedicating the month of July to Oona Balloona I knew I HAD to get on the action.
I got hip to Oona's blog not too long before she participated in Project Sewn and the competition sealed the deal on my love for her and her creativity!
This skort is inspired by HER!
This is Simplicity 1370.
It is very similar to the Zara skort that all the fashion bloggers have been rocking.
The fabrics are an interesting pair.
The tribal striped fabric is a corduroy that I got from Hancock fabrics on clearance.
I only had one yard of it so I was EXTRA nervous about trying to match up the pattern on this. more on that later
The red fabric is a cotton twill from the remnant bin at JoAnn's
I used it for the waistband, waistband facing and the front of the shorts because I didn't have enough of the tribal fabric for the front of the shorts. The front of the shorts don't show though so #WIN!
The color is listed as "metro tango red" #fancy
It was very easy to press and sew. It feels almost like denim to me.

I LOVE that this skirt has pockets...BUT they aren't big enough.
I had laid my phone on the pattern piece before I cut it to make sure it would fit but I forgot to account for seam allowance lool
Check out that matching side seam thooooo!!
I spent about an hour trying to figure out how to cut this daggon thing and I'm so happy that my efforts paid off!
Especially in the bizack!
The front two overlay pieces didn't play the same though.
First of all, I cut them first which was a mistake.
Second of all, I didn't stay stitch the top skort overlay as soon as I cut it soooo the stripes are all wavy now.
It's not gonna kill me and I definitely learned a lesson from that.

Would you like a peek at the insides??
front |
I ALMOST used this brown colored zipper that blended well with the colors of the corduroy and would of camouflaged well..
Then I thought "Oona would NOT do that"
Purple is a neutral anyway, right Oona? lol
back.. don't judge my zipper lol I didn't feel like cutting it. |
I really like this skort.... standing up lol
When I go to sit down, it doesn't feel too good on my lady parts lool
My non-experienced, limited sewing brain is telling me I need to extend the crotch length.
I'm going to look it up but any experienced sewers that may read this, PLEASE CHIME IN.
I know the waistband is already attached, but I think I'm going to sew a smaller seam allowance down the front of the shorts down to the crotch and see if that helps.
It would be an absolute shame if I couldn't wear this for real... I love them!
What do you think?
Oona, or nah?
Check out the flickr group for other Oona inspired makes!
Thanks for reading!
See you in the next post!

Looks great for a new sewer. Try triming the crotch seam a little more or make notches in it. That will release the seam a bit more and give you more room!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I have to figure out SOMETHING cuz these need to get worn lol
DeleteGirl you better work! I am glad you warned me bout the lady parts.. I will need to extend a lot, cause my hind parts will need it! Too cute!
