I just don't understand the logic behind rompers. Like, I'm completely opposed to the idea of having to pretty much get naked every time I want to use the bathroom. Sooo awkward and uncomfortable! not to mention if I'm out in public! They can definitely look extra classy and elegant at times but just the idea of stripping down in a dirty public restroom just makes me shutter. You gotta squat, hold your whole outfit up , pull toilet paper, wipe, do an arabesque, pirouette.. like who has time to do gymnastics when they have to go?! I say all that to say...I made a romper.
And I'm not happy about it. lol I made this romper to go with the Stitch Once, Rip Twice romper challenge. I wasn't originally going to make one because I'm so anti-romper, but then I had all of these magical ideas about having a bodice and a bottom that separates by buttons and a side invisible zipper for the pants portion and all types of other fancy stuff. But life happened and I didn't have time to make my plans come to life. And I couldn't opt out because I'M the one that asked for the group extension so that I could finish lol Well I COULD have opted out but that'd be kinda whack.
So I pulled out McCall's 6083 out of the stash and this remnant from JoAnn's. I had just enough fabric to squeeze these pieces out but I really wanted to pattern-match... well at the side seams at least.I realized that I wouldn't be able to do that with the pants pieces so I decided to cut them on the crossgrain NOT realizing that this material had stretch. I seriously thought that it didn't have any stretch until I starting sewing the bodice *forehead palm*. Not THAT big of a deal to outsiders looking in but my body lets me know it's a big deal when I put it on lol
Anyhoo, I believe I cut a straight size 10 which provides very little ease on me. Kinda awkward with the pants cut on the crosswise but I think it would have been cool if it was cut properly.
I used 3/4" elastic at the top edge and the waist. Question: How do you keep the fabric from sliding back and forth along the elastic? Do you tack down the side seams or something? I never use the elastic guide so maybe my answer is there?
perfect pattern placement *face palm* |
I did a narrow hem on the romper because it was already super short and I didn't want to walk around with booty shorts.
It has pockets but they're are kind of hard to see because the fabric is so busy. I don't have much else to say about it except that I probably won't wear it out just because it's uncomfortable and I hate being uncomfortable in public. Even if it is in the name of fashion. lol
As I get older, I feel less the need to have to impress people. Yes, I like to look nice wear nice outfits but not at the cost of being comfortable. I just can't do it lol Anyway, so now that this romper is out of the way, maybe I can get to making the romper I had my heart set out on. Maybe if I come across the right fabric.. who knows?
xoxo,
Tasha
I guess the whole idea behind rompers is so nicely illustrated by your photos … on the right body they look gorgeous. Having said that... your first and last post paragraphs got me nodding in acceptance so vigurously that I think I must have dislodged a vertebrae or something…
ReplyDeleteLOL thanks, Sasha!
DeleteI hate that whole thing about rompers too but they are so flattering and comfortable I love them. I am in the process of making a denim one but it will have buttons or something to get in an out easy. I am still thinking about this as well .. Very cute!
ReplyDeleteyes, definitely flattering with the right fit. Thanks, Donna! I'll be waiting on yours
Deleteyou know I had the exact same thoughts on adding a zip around the middle of a playsuit - however with no pattern to hand I bought a playsuit on sale for £15 adn am now looking to see how best to reconstruct it! yours looks great though :-)

DeleteIve been wanting to make a jumpsuit but I gotta admit, the thought of a bathroom trip has held me back....you so right. How to choreograph all those moves & still aim straight....dear me. But you've done this romper proud...great job!!
ReplyDeletelol thank you!
DeleteThis looks very flattering on you!! Well done! I agree with the statement. That is why I have yet to make one. Thanks for the second and third thoughts though.
ReplyDeletethanks, Stephanie!
DeleteTasha your romper looks great! You should be able to talk the elastic down in four places; The side seams, and at the center front and center back. That should work for you. Keep on sewing!
ReplyDeleteVal
